Editors Note: Tall Ships America's Tall Ship Challenge series is independent of the Operation Sail tall ships events scheduled in New Orleans, New York, and elsewhere in 2012. More on OpSail events.

Gazela PrimieroNewport, R.I. -- Celebrating the bicentennial commemoration of the War of 1812, more than 25 tall ships will make their way up the east coast of North America this summer to participate in the Tall Ships Challenge Atlantic Coast 2012 series of races and public maritime festivals.  Coordinated by Tall Ships America in collaboration with local organizers, the Tall Ships Challenge  fleet will be hosted at festivals in four major ports of call: Savannah, Ga. (May 3-7), Greenport, N.Y. (May 24-28), Newport, R.I. (July 6-9) and Halifax, Nova Scotia (July 19-23).

Among the international ships planning to participate in the events are the 191-foot Indonesian Naval barquentine Dewaruci; the French Naval tall ships La Belle Poule and Etoile; and the 179-foot barque Picton Castle from the Cook Islands.  U.S. vessels include the majestic 295-foot U.S. Coast Guard barque Eagle, HMS Bounty, Gazela, Lynx, Pride of Baltimore II, and many more.

“The member vessels of Tall Ships America help young people – who are referred to as students or trainees – develop confidence, competency and courage through the authentic challenges and adventures of seafaring,” said Tall Ships America Executive Director Bert Rogers. “The Tall Ships Challenge series is a celebration of our maritime heritage and these fundamental values that define us as Americans.”

Fireboat John J. Harvey hoping to raise $166,000 to match federal grant

As the end of the year approaches, many non-profit preservation organizations and maritime museums are raising awareness of their funding needs. Below is an example of these efforts. Fyddeye urges you to support your favorite maritime preservation project with a donation.

Fireboat John J. HarveyThe historic fireboat John J. Harvey, which is based in New York, is attempting to raise nearly $166,000 to match a federal Save America's Treasures grant. In an email to supporters, Save Our Ships, New York, which owns and operates the fireboat, says it needs to raise the full amount of $165,955 by Jan. 31, 2013 or risk losing the $320,000 federal grant. The funds would be used to restore the fireboat's decks, house and stacks, ensuring critical watertight integrity from above. The group has already spent a $320,000 state grant on the project.

Launched in 1931, the John J. Harvey worked in New York Harbor for more than 60 years, fighting several famous fires before the New York Fire Department retired the vessel in 1995. Rescued from the scrap heap, the fireboat became a hero of the 9/11 attacks by assisting rescue and evacuation operations in lower Manhattan. The preservation work, done largely by volunteers, has been recognized in the Congressional Record and by awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Preservation League of New York, the Steamship Historical Society of America and the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance.

Save Our Ships New York runs several education programs on the vessel, including free trips in New York harbor, on the Hudson River and throughout Long Island Sound to promote public access and interest in the waterfront. The fireboat also appears in a number of summer maritime festivals and often welcomes dignitaries and new large ships with displays of her water shot from her monitors. More information on how to donate is available at www.fireboat.org.
