Fireboats
Fireboats have protected waterfronts since the 19th century. Many are preserved as reminders of great disasters and the sacrifices of firefighters. And some are occassionally called back to duty, as was the fireboat John J. Harvey during the attacks on New York on Sept. 11, 2001. Launched in 1931, the fireboat John J. Harvey is now a floating museum in New York Harbor. The fireboat was briefly called back into service in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Ralph J. Scott
Launched in 1925, the fireboat Ralph J. Scott is berthed on the Los Angeles waterfront.
