Established in 1764, the original Sandy Hook Lighthouse was called the New York Lighthouse, because it marked the entrance to New York Harbor. The original tower still stands, though it was reinforced with brick in the 19th century, and it is no longer an active aid to navigation. The Fresnel lens is still installed in the lighthouse.
