Four lighthouses have stood on Castillo San Felipe del Morro 6th level in its long history. The first one was built in 1846. A second one replaced it in 1876 but took a direct hit during the 1898 bombardment of the Spanish-American War. However, its brick foundation was salvaged in 1899 to erect the first American lighthouse. The current lighthouse was built between 1908 and 1909. Restoration of the El Morro lighthouse was completed in August 2009. It has since been opened to visitors on a regular daily basis from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (weather allowing).
